The Wren (Nannus troglodytes) is a familiar UK bird, and also one of our smallest.  It is known for having a very loud song in comparison with it's size.  Wrens appear in European folklore, one famous story being a competition between birds to see which could fly the highest.  A wren hid under an Eagle's feathers and crept out when the Eagle tired and flew the highest.
