The Dunnock (Prunella modularis), is a
small, familiar UK bird also known as the Hedge Accentor, Hedge Sparrow
or Hedge Warbler. Dunnocks are ground feeders, and even though are a
common garden bird here, they won't use feeders, but rather they prefer
to eat food dropped by other birds along with their diet of insects,
seeds and berries. They also tend to stay close to cover, usually garden
hedgerows etc. Although referred to as a Hedge Sparrow, the Dunnock is
not closely related to the sparrow family.
Interestingly, both male and female
Dunnocks often breed with multiple partners and it's not uncommon to see
3 birds all feeding hatchlings. Only approximately 2% of birds are known
to mate in this way. |
